Rise in car crime

A round-up of police news given at a meeting of Cwmbran Community Council revealed escalating car crime in one area of the town.

PC Darryl Dewer told councillors that although overall crime figures were "steady," Pontnewydd was suffering from increasing levels of car crime.

Ford Escorts and Fiestas in particular are being targeted, said PC Dewer.

Around two hundred residents in the area have been given steering locks in the hope of preventing more crimes.

PC Dewer also reported that dwelling burglaries were down by 50 percent, though police had recorded an increase in break-ins at commercial properties.

Although anti-social behaviour and drink related offences were still causing problems, PC Dewer has plans to tackle them.

"Pub watch only concern licensed premises. What I am looking to do now is to get something that involves an off licence watch too," he said.
