PONTYPOOL United crashed out of the Minolta Welsh Cup on Saturday after losing 20-14 to Treherbert.
United made seven changes from the previous week's team with full-back Gareth Thomas, centre Nathan Bowles, scrum-half Rhys Griffths, hooker Michael Jones, prop Stephen Parfitt and back rowers Mathew Davies and Johnathan Reed all coming in.
The first 20 minutes was very tight but Treherbert drew first blood when their full-back scampered over for the first try.
United hit back through flanker Mathew Davies and David Davies kicked the extras.
But as half-time approached, United's poor tackling allowed the opposition to score another try.
Treherbert socred two further tries in the second period to lead 20-7 before an interception by Stefan Jones was finished off by David Davies to give United hope.
The final 20 minutes was a tense affair as United three everything at Treherbert but the visitors held on for a 20-14 win.
United return to league action on Saturday when they play at home to Pill. In midweek, a United development side beat West Mon School Old Boys 77-0.
Scorers were Craig Jones (3), Mark Harrington (3), Garth Thomas (2), Garth Webb, Ross Gibson, Michael Jones, Mathew Davies and Johnathan Reed. Davied Davies kicked five conversions, Garth Thomas one and Dale Parry one.
