United suffer narrow defeat

PONTYPOOL United suffered their second league defeat of the season as they lost 20-19 at home to Pill in Division Three East on Saturday.

United made eight changes to their team from last week's cup defeat and in came props Ian Davies and Leighton Harris, second rower Iain Bevan, back row forwards Mark Harrington and Warren Edwards, outside half Stuart Lawrence and centres Craig Jones and Chris James.

United started well but it was Pill who scored on their first attack of the game to take a 5-0 lead. United hit back when right wing Chris Lloyd scored in the corner but Pill's forward power helped them restore their lead with a second try.

On the stroke of half-time, United reduced the deficit when Stuart Lawrence kicked a penalty.

Things looked brighter for United in the second half when they took the lead courtesy of a second Lawrence penalty but this lead was short-lived as a weak clearance kick by Malcolm Jones resulted in a third try for Pill.

A fourth try for the visitors gave them a 20-11 lead but United weren't done yet. Lawrence kicked his third penalty and a second try by Chris Lloyd clawed the score back to 20-19 with three minutes left.

Despite good pressure, United were unable to win it at the end. On Saturday, United travel to Cardiff side Old Illtydians.
