Holders go through to second round

HOLDERS Llanarth eased their way through to round two of the Langdon Cup on Saturday after firing six past Govilon.

Peter Maddocks was the hero in the 6-2 home victory as he scored a hat-trick. He opened the scoring in the ninth minute and added a second when he headed in five minutes later.

Llanarth went three up when Justin Harris slid the ball in and a fourth was scored by David Teague from the penalty spot to make it 4-0 at half-time. Teague added his second when he headed home after 47 minutes.

Maddocks completed his treble when he beat the offside trap.

Govilon scored two consolation goals through Kevin Mogford and Luke Ewers. Last year's runners-up Gilwern & District also booked their spot in round two after edging out Panteg 1-0. The only goal of the game came from Adam Carrington in the 12th minute.

They were joined in the second round by Mardy who proved too strong for visitors Usk Town. After taking a 2-1 lead at half-time, Mardy dominated the second half to run out 6-2 winners. Mardy's goals came from a Jonathan Davies hat-trick, Aaron Davies (2) and Jamie Laurent. Danial Bevan scored both goals for Usk.

In the final cup game last Saturday, Blaenavon Blues made it through after a 2-1 victory over Cwmffrwdoer - all the goals coming in the first half. Ryan Keen and Jeff Sterry were on target for Blaenavon while Owain York scored for Cwmffrwdoer.

In the first round of the Benevolent Cup for Division Two sides, Pontypool Town B beat Llanarth B 1-0 with Shaun James netting the all-important goal after 87 minutes.

Gilwern B booked their place in the second round with a 3-1 win over Pandy.

Mark Wakeley gave Gilwern the lead but Richard Pond equalised for Pandy to take the game into extra-time. With no further goals in overtime, the match went to penalties and successful spot-kicks by Sion Thomas and Chris Rees gave Gilwern the victory.
