"OUR best performance of the season so far." That was the verdict from Abergavenny RFC's chairman Mike Aylett, after the club's 51-5 drubbing of Dinas Powys on Saturday.
The victory means Aber have won their four opening games, and sit proudly on top of Division Three East, alongside the table's other 100 percent side, Bargoed.
The Bailey Park side's pack was immense with forwards scoring five of Abergavenny's nine tries, and Aylett was quick to praise the work done by forwards coach Andrew Sutton.
"Our pack was tremendous on Saturday, and Dinas Powys had no answer to its power and agility," Aylett told the Free Press.
In fact, Abergavenny's dominance would have been even greater, but for the fact that Dinas Powys had no cover for its front-row and so passive scrums were enforced throughout the game.
Despite this, Aber's front eight got on top quickly and prop Rob Sevenoaks opened the scoring when he crashed over for a try.
Lock forward Lee Oakey then went over for the first of his two tries, before scores by flanker Stuart Sherrard and second rower Tony Richards put the game beyond the struggling visitors.
Shortly before half-time, Aber's backs got in on the scoring when vice-captain and centre Leighton Thomas scored a try, converted by the club's new outside-half Gareth Spence.
Spence, playing his first game for the first team, after impressing in the seconds, had a solid game and kicked two further conversions in the second half.
The try blitz continued in the second period when sub Ryan Williams ran in a try, followed by another from prolific speed merchant Richard McCormack.
Lee Oakey grabbed his second score of the game before the visitors finally got on the scoresheet with a consolation try.
Centre Matthew Allaway completed the scoring for Abergavenny with a try late on. Aylett said: "This was the best performance of the season so far. We have been threatening to do this to opponents, but on Saturday we delivered. "Coach Gary Lawrence and forwards coach Andrew Sutton are doing a great job for us at the moment."
Abergavenny face Pill Harriers on Saturday, and are expecting a tough battle from the side which went to Pontypool United on Saturday and came home victorious 20-19.
