Man arrested over death

A Cwmbran man is receiving medical treatment in police custody following his arrest on Sunday night in connection with the death of a 53-year-old woman.

The police have had to hold off questioning the man as a result of the medical treatment the man is receiving.

A major investigation into the death of Pauline Elsie Jones after she was found dead in a flat at Leadon Court, Cwmbran last Friday - an incident room was set up in Pontypool and 45 officers were drafted in.

Police say they discovered her body as part of a missing person's inquiry, following a call by a concerned relative.

Following police appeals for information regarding the flat's tenant, Melvin Stewart, 44, originally from Bradford, officers were sent to Yorkshire, before announcing they had traced Mr Stewart.

Officers continued their searches of the flat at Leadon Court, and Mrs Jones' address in Grange Lane, Northville, over last weekend.

Mrs Jones was identified following a post-mortem examination on Saturday, though police have been unable to establish when she died.

Detective Superintendent Geoff Ronayne, who is heading the investigation, said: "We are particularly interested in movements around the flat in the week leading up to Friday, from Monday onwards."

He said he wanted to hear from anyone who witnessed suspicious behaviour, or anyone carrying items from the flat.

A red Ford Escort parked outside the flats was taken by officers on Friday night.

Shocked neighbours of Mrs Jones paid tribute to a "lovely lady".

Mrs Jones' family released a statement on Monday night: "Pauline was a wonderful, patient, caring, friendly person who was liked by all who knew her. She will be deeply missed by family and friends alike."
