Puddle puts a dampener on Race

Race First XI went into this fixture looking to bounce back after an indifferent few weeks previously.

They knew they were in for a hard game against a strong Lliswerry outfit.

Race had several chances in the opening minutes but failed to convert the pressure. The home side took the lead through unfortunate circumstances, as a ball destined for the keeper stopped in a puddle and Lliswerry capitalised with a goal.

Race had to reorganise their defence with the loss, through injury, of reliable sweeper Kevin Berry, through a recurrence of an injury that has plagued the defender all season.

Lliswerry scored their second, more by luck than judgement, when debutante Scott Jenkins saved well only for the rebound to go in.

Lliswerry struck on two more occasions in the second half to seal the fixture, but the promising point that came out of this fixture was the way the Race players gave their all and you could not question the effort and commitment.

The Williams brothers, Tim and Russell, excelled in this game, with Russell having a good debut performance. Mark Drinkwater had a storming game at sweeper, with hard working striker David Jenkins running from start to finish.

This Saturday they face Coed Eva in the County Motors Cup Round One at home.
