Ready to hit the air!

"LIVE on 107.5. This is CROWfm, covering Cwmbran and South Torfaen."

Those are the words which will greet listeners when Cwmbran's community radio station CROWfm goes live on November 27.

Volunteers who will present programmes and work behind the scenes have begun training. Over the next few weeks they will get to grips with all aspects of radio presenting, programme planning and news gathering.

Journalism student and CROWfm volunteer, Danielle Symonds, said: "CrowFM is a fabulous idea, to help both entertain and include the community - to let everyone interact. It's a great chance for me as an individual to gain some experience and meet some new people."

Due to run for 28 days up to Christmas Eve, CROWfm will be based at Wye Court, Thornhill. The location commands a view of almost the whole of Cwmbran and beyond to New Inn, Ponthir, Newport and across the Bristol Channel, reaching a potential audience of 75,000 people.

Operations Manager Darren Powis said he and the rest of the CROWfm team were pleased with progress on the project so far. "The first training session went very well. We have a good group of people on aboard for the project. We've also just had the frequency we wanted allocated to us by Ofcom - and had excellent support from the voluntary sector and other organisations. It's hard work, but it all brings closer to the moment when we can start broadcasting."

CROWfm is supported by various organisations, including: Costar, Webster.uk.net, Torfaen County Borough Council, Working Links, The Cwmbran Operational Group (COG), the Cwmbran regeneration team, Torfaen Voluntary Alliance, Workers Educational Association, Media Trust and Torfaen Resource & Activity Centre.
