Police: Trevethin is our No 1 priority

Tackling crime in Trevethin is going to be top priority for Pontypool Police.

Following our article highlighting increased levels of anti-social behaviour in the area, Acting Superintendent Adrian Erasmus and newly appointed Ward Officer PC Mick Lumsden paid a visit to the area.

They met local councillors and spoke to residents about concerns.

Supt Erasmus said: "The Trevethin area is a priority and having spoken to the community I fully appreciate their concerns.

"I have tasked analytical staff with researching the exact nature of the crime and disorder problems in order that we can coordinate an effective response.

"There is undoubtedly a challenge for both the police and local community but I am determined we will succeed. There is a small minority of individuals who are having an adverse effect on the quality of life for the Trevethin community overall. This situation will not be tolerated.

"It is important for the community to have a good working relationship with the police and that is the idea behind PC Lumsden's role.

"He will be the permanent point of contact within the Trevethin neighbourhood and work in partnership with others to solve local problems.

"Reducing crime and disorder, however, demands a joint approach involving the community. I am already satisfied that the majority of crime and disorder is caused by local people and not people travelling into the area.

"People in Trevethin know who is responsible for these problems and I urge them to contact either the local police or Crimestoppers with any information they may have to assist us."
