New Inn beat cup holders

HOLDERS Gilwern & District crashed out of the second round of the P & P Pest Control Open Cup on Saturday.

They were defeated 3-2 to New Inn despite going into half-time with a one goal lead. New Inn's Jeff Tozer fired a brace of goals while Lee Taylor scored a third while Gilwern's goals came from Chris Davies.

Mardy A and Tranch treated fans to a nine-goal cup thriller. Tranch must have thought they had already booked their place in round three when they went into half-time 3-0 up.

But an amazing second half saw Mardy score four times and the game was only settled in the dying moments when Shane Thomas sealed victory for Tranch.

Mardy's goals came from Jonathan Davies (2), Mark Davies and Stuart Smith. As well as Thomas's last gasp winner, Tranch's goal getters were Mark Walker (2) and Andrew Hayes (2).

The derby cup tie between Pontypool Town A and Race was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch at Albion Road. It will be replayed in the New Year.
