Winning Walter

PONTYPOOL Swimming Club's masters section are on the crest of a wave at the moment after recent triumphs.

Leading the way is 45-year-old Walter Syrett, of Abertillery, who made a big splash at the ASA British Masters Swimming Championships in Sheffield.

He not only won gold medals in the 50m, 100m and 200m breast-stroke but also set three Welsh records. Walter was also in action earlier this month at the Welsh ASA Championships held in Abertillery. He was part of a four-man team from Pontypool that came home with eight gold medals.

The relay team of Walter, Ray Samson, Phil Norman and Simon Monnington also took silver in the medley and third in the freelance relay.
