'Newport win could turn season around'

ONWARDS and upwards - that's the message from Pooler coach Steve Jones after his side's dismantling of Newport.

Jones believes the result on Friday night could be the catalyst that sees the club climb the Welsh Premier League table.

"It was probably our best performance of the season and to be honest we should have won by a much wider margin," Jones told the Free Press after the 20-14 victory at Pontypool Park.

"We totally dismantled them up front and they had no answer to our domination. Even people from Newport admitted to me that they had been no match for us."

The task now for the Pontypool squad is to build on this confidence-boosting win and put behind them the disappointing start to the season.

Jones added: "Previously the results have not gone for us but in most of our games, our performances have not been bad.

"I have always said that if we play the way we know we can, we will cause a few more surprises this season."

While the head coach applauded the overall team effort, he gave a special mention to Pooler's Pacific Island centre Duane Luki who was playing only his third game for the club.

"Duane was very impressive throughout and he deserved his try. He's still new to the club and is still learning but he looked the part against Newport and I'm hoping there are more performances like that to come."
