League restarts with nailbiters

It was back to normal after a three week lay-off for the football and rugby internationals.

Current Division One leaders Crickowel needed just one point from four remaining matches to win promotion to the Gwent County League, but lost their away match against bottom club Pontypool Town 1-0, thanks to a Jason Stokes goal scored after 10 minutes.

Second placed Govillon visited neighbours Clydach Wasps and the match finished up all square at 1-1.

Dean Morgan put Govillon one up with a goal scored in the 80th minute but eight minutes later Nicky Brown fired the Wasps level.

Govillon stay in second and Clydach Wasps ninth.

A depleted Tranch United Side played host to Gilwern & District and two goals from Mark Walker - taking his season's tally to 25 gave Tranch a 2-0 half time lead.

But in the second half Gilwern scored three goals - two from Jayde Kelly and an own-goal by Andrew Burchill - to win the match 3-2.

Usk Town kept up their winning ways with a 5-1 away win over Lower New Inn. Goal-scorer's for Usk were Dan Bevan (four) and Michael Ives. The New Inn scorer was Robert Morter.

Mardy beat Llanhilleth 3-2. Andrew Childs put Llanarth 1-0 up after just five minutes.

Mardy drew level at 1-1 after 35 minutes with a Jonathan Roberts own-goal.

In the second half, Phil Melville put Mardy ahead with a goal scored after 52 minutes. Llanilleth equalised in the 66th minute, but Mardy then sealed the match with a Phil Melville header on 78 minutes. Mardy lie in seventh while Llanhilleth are tenth.

Current Division Two leaders Prescoed lost their third consecutive match, going down 2-0 to New Inn.

Jeff Tozer scored both goals. Prescoed remain top after completing all their Division Two fixtures.

Race United, who could pip Prescoed for the Division Two title were held to a 1-1 home draw by Fairfield United. Race now need to win all their games.

Paul Haywars gave Race a 1-0 half time lead and Glenn Rees scored in the second half for Fairfield United who are in tenth position.

PILCS shot into a 5-0 half time lead against their visitors LLanarth B but Llanarth B scored three to make it 5-3. Goal scorers for PILCS were Paul Taylor (2), Mike Morrison, Aley Lewis and Paul Combes. Llanarth B scorers were Alistair Maidment (2) and Paul Detheridge. PILCS remain in eighth place and Llanarth B are 14th.

Pontypool B made it a club winning double on the day with a 3-1 away win at Gilwern B. Ponty led 2-1 at half time with goals from a Richard Wakeling hat-trick while Gilwern's goal was scored by Rob Warner. Gilwern hold seventh while Pontypool B lie in 13th.

Abergavenny Thursdays won 3-0 at home to Sebastopol. Goal scorers were Huw Tamlyn (2) and Ross Fur. They are now sixth and Sepastopol 12th.

The P&P Open Cup Quarter Final match between Pandy and Goytre was again postponed as the pitch was deemed too dangerous to play on. The match has been re-arranged for 6.00 pm, Monday April 11.
