Golf offer to women

PONTYPOOL Golf Club in partnership with Torfaen Sport Development Unit and Golf Development Wales are inviting the area's women and girls to tee-off at the club's free taster session on Sunday, April 10.

This is one of many golf clubs across Wales taking part in the initiative developed by Golf Development Wales and Ryder Cup Wales to encourage more people - particularly women and girls - to take up golf in the run-up to the Ryder Cup, which descends on Welsh shores in 2010.

Clubs across the length and breadth of the country are organising a free taster day followed by six free continuation lessons for groups of between six and ten women which will be funded by Golf Development Wales.

Should participants be tempted by the fun of the fairways at the sessions, further lessons will then be available at a discounted rate as well as a trial membership scheme.

Brian Davies, of Golf Development Wales, said: "We hope that by encouraging more women and girls to try golf, we can increase female membership at golf clubs. Many women want to try the game but are quite shy about approaching their local club for lessons on their own."
