Blues take champs to limit

On Sunday Blaenavon Blues Girls U14's brought the curtain down on a very successful first season in the South Wales Girls league with a display to be proud of.

The Blues entertained league champions and cup finalists Cardiff City and were minutes away from causing the upset of the season. Earlier in the season the Blues were comprehensively beaten by Cardiff City in a one sided affair, but on Sunday it was a totally different game.

The Blues attacked Cardiff from the first whistle and within two minutes were in the lead with an excellent goal from their inspirational Captain Lyndsey Davies.

Once again the Blues attacked the Cardiff goal relentlessly and this time they were rewarded with the goal of the game by midfielder Emily Reed. Everytime Cardiff gained possession the Blues pressurised them into making mistakes and with the game being so one-sided you could have mistaken who was champions, especially when the Blues hit their third goal before half time.

In the second half it was Cardiff's turn to apply the pressure and after 9 minutes being played they pulled a goal back.

This appeared to inspire City with 13 minutes remaining Cardiff scored two quick goals to make the score 3-3.

However the Blues were unlucky not to put the game beyond Cardiff's reach.

With the game drawing to an end and the game going from end to end there was inevitably going to be a winner, unfortunately for the Blues it was Cardiff who grabbed this with only five minutes remaining to make the final score Blaenavon Blues 3 Cardiff City 4.

After such an entertaining game and many excellent individual performances credit must go to all of the Blues players.

Finally the girls will now be looking forward to their end of season trip to Manchester City's ground to see the opening game of the Women's European Championships between England & Finland at the beginning of June.
