Word out about TV appearance

A PONTYPOOL landlord made his first TV appearance last week as he tested his wits in the popular show Countdown.

John Brackstone, from the George Hotel in Pontypool, appeared on Channel Four last Thursday, and in his debut match beat his opponent and remained to fight his corner.

He has always been a fan of the show and between opening hours at the pub, has often played the game from his sofa.

Viewers may have seen Mr Brackstone, pictured, on the show on Friday, Monday and Tuesday as well.

He has seen off four other competitors to date and will also be appearing today.

As for his remaining time on the show, Mr Brackstone is remaining tight-lipped. Fans will have to tune in this afternoon at 3.15pm, to find out if he kept up his winning streak.

He said: "I was really pleased with it, I did much better than I thought I would.

"I wrote off for an application form some time ago and then went to Bristol for an audition. There were lots of people there from all over Wales and the West of England."

Going on TV was he said, "a nerve-wracking experience, but it got better the more I went on."

During his time on the show he got several nine letter words, using all the random letters to form words like, 'mediators' and 'customers' to win points.

The dictionary-based game was his favourite. "I wasn't brilliant at the maths," he said.

Mr Brackstone was pleased to meet the hosts of Countdown.

"Richard Whiteley comes across very differently in person. He is really good at putting contestants at ease." And mathematical wizard Carol Vorderman? "She's lovely," he said.
