Man gropes woman 'in jest'

A young woman was groped at a Newport pub, a court was told.

The 20-year-old was on the dance floor at Newport's Walkabout when it happened. But when challenged about his action, David Rowles laughed and later repeated his actions, Newport crown court heard.

The incident took place in the early hours of January 8 when Rowles had consumed vast quantities of alcohol. Because of his behaviour he was thrown out of the pub.

Richard Cole, prosecuting, said the woman swore and shouted at Rowles but he then tried to kiss her.

But Sarah Waters, defending, said 28-year-old Rowles, a man of previous good character had drunk six pints of beer, alcopops and Aftershocks. He had no recollection of events, but accepted the young woman's account. He admitted sexual assault.

Several letters were handed to the court, testifying to Rowles' good character.

Ms Waters said Rowles, of Stiels, Coed Eva, Cwmbran, was full of remorse and shame and blamed the alcohol.

The recorder, David Aubrey QC, imposed a three-year community rehabilitation order with £150 costs.
