New Mayor proud to serve Torfaen

COUNCILLOR Lyn Irwin donned the mayoral chains of office as he began his term as mayor last Thursday.

Outgoing mayor Yvonne Warren handed over the chains after she chaired her final council committee meeting.

Pontypool cllr Lyndon Lloyd Irwin said: "This is a very proud moment for me, enabling me to serve the people of Torfaen."

During his term of office, he will carry on the tradition of the Mayor's Appeal by supporting Cancer Research Wales, the NSPCC, the 3rd Pontypool Guides and 4th Pontypool Brownies. This appeal will be launched on 1 July 2005.

Councillor Irwin is a well-known face around the borough and belongs to many organisations. He is particularly active in supporting youth organisations, adult learning and the church.

Speaking at the handover of the chains of office to Cllr Irwin, Cllr Warren looked back on her year as mayor. Fundraising events for her chosen charities Age Concern Torfaen and young people's charities raised £20,500, with an additional £4000 for the Tsunami appeal.

Cllr Warren broke with tradition by choosing a variety of consorts to accompany her on civic engagements throughout her term of office. "I do admit to constantly refreshed surprise at the esteem is which the mayoral office is held here in Torfaen," she said.

"People see the office of mayor as the face of the council and are ever welcoming.

"I hope I have represented Torfaen County Borough Council well in accepting all invitations offered wherever possible. We have made a huge effort this year in taking TCBC out into the community in the most friendly and approachable way possible. I give sincere thanks to cllr Lyn Irwin in giving me total support in fulfilling obligations."

Other highlights of her term included welcoming peace campaigner Bruce Kent to Torfaen and consequently representing Wales at a Mayors for Peace conference in New York.

"Can I thank members and staff of TCBC for their generosity and support," she added.
