TORFAEN Sprints were held this year at Maindee, Newport, a venue where the Blaenavon Barracudas have had considerable success recently. This meet was no different, with 52 individual medals from 75 swims, and 40 new personal bests created.

Charlie Rogers commenced proceedings, winning a gold in the 13-14 boys 100m fly. He collected a further six medals including three silver and two bronze. In the same age group, Matthew Braddon took gold in the 50m breast. At the other end of the age groups, eight-year-old Brandon Davies won five medals from five swims, taking gold in the 100 Individual Medley, with a silver and two bronze to add to his impressive tally.

Leading the way for the girls, with eight medals from eight swims, including gold in the 50m breast stroke, was Meggy Butler in the 14-15 age group. Sister Lilly also won four medals, her best being a bronze in the 100m butterfly. Maddy White, competing in the same age group, came fifth in the 50m backstroke. Mercedes White, her younger sister, had a great weekend, winning six medals from six swims, including a silver in the 11 years 50m breast stroke.

Alys Evans, in the 12-13 age group, won four medals, whilst Lizzie Grant, in the ten-year group, won double gold in the 50m & 100m backstroke races. In the same age group, Megan Evans also won double gold in the 50m and 100m breastroke, whilst Joeley Braddon added four more medals to her collection including two silver and a bronze.

Bethan Dattani, in the 12-13 age group, had six podium places from all six swims, collecting gold in the 50m backstroke, plus three silvers and two bronze.

The relay events added a further ten medals, pride of place going to the 13-14 boys who won gold in both the freestyle and medley races. The 12-13 girls also won gold in their freestyle race.
