Teenagers' golden performance

Four young people from Torfaen clubs have returned from the National Junior Track and Field Championships for people with Disabilities with five gold medals.

For some of these youngsters it was their first experience of competition, this year held in Blackpool.

The athletes, all competing in the under 15 age range, were Ieuan Coombes from Caerleon a member of Gwent Dragons, Kieran Duke from Pontnewydd of Gwent Dragons, James Ball from Ponthir of Gwent Dragons and Cwmbran Harriers, and Daniel Norton from Cwmbran of Cwmbran Harriers Kieran, cousin to paralympian Gareth, returned with Gold medals in shot and discus, both with new National Records.

James had Gold in 100 metres and long jump and silver in 200 metres.

Daniel won Gold in 100 and 200 metres both with new National Records lowering the 200 metre time by a staggering 7.5 seconds.

Grenville Bolter Disability Sport Cymru Development Officer for Torfaen, said: "This is a marvellous achievement by these young people who are a credit to their clubs and coaches.

"It is very pleasing as a development officer to see the inclusive approach that Cwmbran Harriers are making in their membership, coaching and support that they are giving to all athletes Torfaen have every reason to be proud of these athletes and the clubs that they represent, who knows what will happen by 2008 and 2012."

Jeff Harwood, coach to Daniel, said: "Daniel's run in the 200 metres was very impressive but he has the capability of going considerably quicker as his strength and competitive experience grows.

"Daniel was very disappointed not to have been able to compete in the world Cerebral Palsy World Championships in Connecticut as he was too young but this result will be some consolation for him."
