Diamond couple toast marriage

It was sixty years ago that this Pantygasseg pair was married.

Now Hadyn and Gwyneth Tudor are celebrating their Diamond Wedding anniversary.

A Former blacksmith at Hafodyrynys Colliery, Hadyn now 83 married his bride at Pontnewynydd Parish church on December 22 1945.

During the war Gwyneth also went out to work and was employed at ROF Glascoed.

Gwyneth, 80, celebrated their landmark anniversary with her husband, family and friends at a party.

The event was held at Pontnewynydd Community Centre.

The "Diamond" couple have lived in Pantygasseg all their lives and were touched by all the gifts and well wishers they received.

The couple married in 1945 - that was the year that;

The Nuremburg trial began and 20 Nazis came before the judges.

In October the UN was born as Second World War allies ratified the UN Charter at a ceremony in Washington DC.

The Allies celebrated VJ Day on August 15

America dropped atom bombs on Nagasaki and Hiroshima.

Stars of the screen included Abbott and Costello and Rita Hayworth, and musical hits of the year included Peggy Lee's I don't know enough about you, as well as Noel Coward's I wonder what happened to him.

In Pontypool that year;

Col J Powell Jenkins, RAMC, who returned to his Griffithstown practice after serving throughout the war received the OBE.

Pontnewydd received visits from three world-famous sportsmen, Bill Hitch and Patsy Hendren - both former England Test cricketers, and Joe Davis, world snooker and billiards champion.

Pontypool RFC secretary W Rowley resigned after 19 years.
