It was a good week to be back after the two week mid-season break. The pitches were pretty good for the time of year, although the weather was rather cold. All the league's scheduled games were played, with a mix of Open Cup and League fixtures.
Highest individual score in the P&P Pest Control Open Cup Round Two was Usk Town A's 14-2 away win over Crickhowell.
The writing was on the wall at half time when Usk Town A led 8-0. Crickhowell had Ryan Bird sent off in the second minute for a professional foul and you simply cannot play against Division One high-flyers with ten men! Goal scorers for Usk Town were Lee Watkins (five), Jeremy Barton (three), Christian Phillips (two), George Ashworth (two) and Michael Ives (two). Goal scorers for Crickhowell were Jason Bale and Simon Wall.
Fairfield Utd put up a good fight in their match away to Govilon, played at Bailey Park, Abergavenny. Fairfield Utd went one nil up after 25 minutes with a goal scored by Daley Whitcombe. Jamie Wilkins put Govilon level right on half time. The Govilon winner went to prolific goal scorer Jamie Wilkins in the 75th minute, Wilkins headed the goal from a Matthew Ham corner. Final score, Govilon 2 Fairfield Utd 1.
Mardy A gave an excellent performance to knock out visitors Tranch Utd 5-0.
For Mardy A Michael Sage hit a hat-trick and Sam White and Steven Smith got one apiece.
Clydach Wasps A beat Division Two's Pontypool Town B 2-1.
Jason Stokes put Pontypool Town B one nil up with a goal scored after 20 minutes. The Wasps went level from a penalty goal scored by Kyle Cheshire after 35 minutes. Pontypool Town B battled well but Wasps went into a 2-1 lead with a goal scored by Ryan Price in the 65th minute.
New Inn appeared to hold the edge over their Division Two rivals, Sebastopol, to go through to the next round by winning 5-2. The New Inn goals came via a Lee Waddon hat-trick plus two by Billy Day.
The Sebastopol goal scorers were Alex Lewis and Darryl Nightingale. Current Division One leaders, Tranch Utd, were playing in the Cup and Goytre's 2-0 away win at Gilwern & District puts Goytre back up on the number one position. But Tranch Utd have games in hand. Cwmffrwdoer move up to fifth position following their 3-1 away win at Lower New Inn. Goal scorers for Cwmffrwdoer were Christian Parry (two) and Ross Peake. The goal for Lower New Inn was scored by Robert Morter. MOM Lower New Inn: Kyle Hazard. MOM Cwmffrwdoer: Kyle Tovey.
Race Utd's long run of defeats came to an end with a 2-0 away win over local rivals Panteg with goals from Jason Howells and Adam Smith. MOM Panteg: Mark Eaves. MOM Race Utd: Barry Rees. Phil Jenkins acted as stand-in referee in the absence of the official referee, who failed to turn up. This was Race's first league win since September 10, 2005 against Clydach Wasps.
Pontypool Town collected maximum points from their visit to Llanarth by winning the match 2-0. Both goals were scored in the first half through Richard Wakeling and Wayne Nash. MOM Llanarth: Colin Morgan. MOM Pontypool Town: Richard Wakeling.
Current Division Two leaders Pandy won their local derby over Mardy B 9-1. Prescoed, in second place with three games in hand, kept the pressure on Pandy with a 5-2 win over newcomers Clydach Wasps B who played very well. Llanarth B won their local derby at Usk Island away to Usk Town B. The home side led Llanarth B 1-0 ten minutes before time through a Steven Wade goal. Paul Alexander and Jon Lee scored the goals to claim the points.
PILCS beat newcomers Llanfoist 5-1. Goal scorers for PILCS were Nathan Bones (two), Andrew Murton (two) and Michael Morrison. The goal scorer for Llanfoist was Nathan Jones. MOM PILCS: Mike Morrison. MOM Llanfoist: Jason Bowen.
