Players in crash

CWMBRAN Town football players had a lucky escape after they were involved in a motorway smash on Friday night.

The team was travelling down the M4 to face the Haverfordwest County team in four separate cars, when two of the vehicles became involved in a crash.

Club assistant secretary Andy Havelot said: "They were travelling just past junction 38, and a car pulled out in front of Jamie Edwards' car. "He slammed the brakes on hard to avoid hitting it, which meant another of our team's cars, a seven-seater people carrier, went into the back of them."

Left-winger Jamie Edwards was driving his car to the match, followed by Paul Bassett, club vice president.

There were four players in Mr Edwards' car and seven people altogether in Mr Bassett's including five more players. None of the players or other passengers in the car was seriously injured. Mr Havelot said a few suffered slight whiplash.

Centre-half Daniel Clare needed some physiotherapy after slightly injuring his shoulder.

The match against Haverfordwest was cancelled.
