Convincing win for Garn U16s

Under 16s Gwent Cup Garndiffaith U16s 39 Brynmawr U16s 7

This was intended as a home fixture for Brynmawr, but the venue had to be switched at the last minute in this pool stage of the Gwent Cup.

Garn were worthy of their win, however, as they dominated every aspect of this encounter, particularly the set pieces, where they won so much possession. Flanker Jamie Ireland won almost all of the opponents' throw-ins at the lineout, denying their opponents any quality ball.

When Brynmawr were in possession, which was not very often, they did look threatening, but the Garn's defence was resolute.

The Garn were on the score sheet within minutes of the start when wing Dan Evans touched down in the corner.

Minutes later, wing Dan Davies scored the first of his two tries in the opposite corner and the Garn were really on the ascendancy when full-back Clayton Gullis touched down to extend the lead.

With the visitors unable to cope with the continuous pressure, infringements became aplenty, and the Garn were awarded a penalty in front of the posts for fly-half Owain Davies to convert and lead at half-time 18-0.

During the second period, the Garn continued to exert pressure and scored further tries through scrum-half Sean Courtney, centre Thomas Rosser and D Davies with his second, O Davies converting.

Brynmawr did respond with a try of their own near the end, but this was a mere consolation as the Garn players will be pleased with their efforts as they played for each other, and each player gave 100%.
