A MAN threatened his pregnant wife with a knife just after he had been released from prison.
Lee Appleby, 24, of Glenside, Pontypool, became aggressive and told wife Danielle she "made him sick" after she got together with another man in his absence, Newport crown court heard.
Michael Jones, prosecuting, told the court how Appleby met his wife and married her early in 2005 but that a few weeks into the marriage he became "aggressive" towards her.
"In August last year they were apart and she met another man with whom she started a new relationship," added Mr Jones.
"Appleby came home in October from prison and a row broke out between the couple, during which he threatened his wife with a long-handled kitchen knife, saying he wanted to kill her."
After discussing their future Appleby again became aggressive and his wife called police.
But as she dialled 999 Appleby cut the phone wires and slashed his forearm, telling her that by the time police came he would be dead.
Police arriving on the scene took him to hospital where he was treated for his injuries.
Hilary Roberts, defending, said Appleby had harmed only himself. "He is adamant he didn't intend to hurt her," said Mr Roberts.
"She was expecting his child and he found it difficult to cope. He needs guidance and help."
Appleby, who admitted affray, was sentenced to a two-year community order with a course in enhanced thinking skills.
The recorder Anthony John Seys Llewellyn, said Appleby acted out of character in "acute circumstances."
