New Inn unlucky in defeat

Gwent County Division 3 Trethomas Bluebirds 2 New Inn 0 Despite the scoreline, table-toppers Trethomas will thank their lucky stars after they somehow walked away with all three points.

The visitors outplayed the leaders for the majority of the match and stood up to the Trethomas intimidation tactics.

New Inn thought they had the perfect start when Jeff Tozer found the back of the net, nodding home Nathan Blackwell's cross, the goal ruled out by the referee.

On the half-hour mark, New Inn were awarded a penalty after a handball in the area. Unfortunately for New Inn, Jeff Tozer sent the 'keeper the wrong way, but also dragged it past the post.

Right on half-time, Trethomas had a brief spell of possession, but they made it count when their wide player drifted in from the left before slamming a low drive into the bottom corner.

The second half began with Trethomas playing with a bit more confidence after theirearlier goal, but New Inn dominated the last half hour of the match.

New Inn created numerous chances, but were denied by the Trethomas 'keeper who pulled off some fine saves, Lee Foxhall and Jeff Tozer both going close.

With the last kick of the game, Trethomas sealed the win with their second, New Inn unable to stop it after pushing everyone forward. Relief all round for Trethomas who now look certain favourites to retain first spot until the end of the season.

The only thing which let New Inn down was their finishing, they need to be more clinical in front of goal, but the effort and commitment cannot be questioned.

They now host Thornwell, and with results going their way, the push for promotion is still very much alive.
