Bikes cause havoc

POPULAR Christmas presents have caused havoc on a Torfaen estate where police have targeted youths tearing through the streets on motorbikes.

The Neighbourhood Policing Team confiscated two bikes and handed out 11 formal warnings to nuisance bikers, following complaints of youths riding motorbikes and other vehicles around the Cold Barn Farm areas and the top of Pontypool Park.

Police believe youngsters received the off-road bikes as Christmas gifts from parents who are unaware that by riding the bikes they are breaking the law. Neighbourhood Police Sergeant Mike Pheasant said: "The people riding these bikes are not only putting their lives in danger by riding recklessly, they are also causing distress to residents and ruining landscaped areas. These bikes can only be ridden in specific areas designated for off road biking. Anywhere else and they are breaking the law."

Gwent Police advised all parents and youngsters who have these bikes that it is an offence to

Ride or drive in a careless or inconsiderate manner

Ride or drive on common, on access land, a footpath or bridleway.

Ride a motorcycle in a public place without adequate insurance. In order to ride on a public road the driver must ensure they have all the relevant documents including MoT, insurance and Licence.

Gwent Police advise using legal clubs and stick to routes within the force area. A list of organisations can be obtained from the following websites: www.acu.org.uk, www.offroad-motorsport.com, www.lara gb.org
