Race perform better but fail to pick up win

Lucas Cwmbran 2 Race First XI 2

The display in this fixture was a vast improvement in both attitude and football wise. With recent performances, much was left to be desired. The Race were up against a much improved Lucas Cwmbran side, who in their own right have recently picked up some excellent results of late. With injuries and work commitments hitting the selection of the side again, with player/coach James Proudman required to step into the back line, and did so with such efficiency. Also making his first team debut this season, Barry Reed following his several man of the match performances for the second team, he was drafted into the midfield and performed heroically.

Despite some early pressure from the home side, Race went ahead following a two touch football move from their defence, which involved Tim Williams, Robert Tovey, who laid it to captain, whose calm finish, sliding it past the advancing keeper from 10 yards out. Race started applying their own concertive pressure and went close again on a few a occasions, and also had a goal disallowed for offside.

Lucas equalised through a defensive melee in the box, with the ball finally finding the home team, as the striker coolly slotted home. Just before halftime Striker Robert Tovey, who worked tirelessly all game. beat the defence with his speed to beat the home keeper.

Both sides created numerous chances during the second half with both keepers keeping the scoreline at two one in favour of the Race. Despite their hard work rate during the second period and some good football, the three points slipped away with ten minutes left. What seemed to be a foul on the Race fullback, went unpunished and the ball finding a Lucas player who struck to grab a point for the home team. This was a cruel blow to Race whose efforts deserved all three points.

Race Second XI 2 Goytre AFC 4

Race second team made title chasing Goytre work hard for their points. With the scoreline only one nil to Goytre at the break, Race drew level and had the visitors on the back foot. Despite their efforts two defensive errors cost Race dearly as a point, which would of been richly deserved, thanks to their commitment, slipped away. Goals came from Martin Bewick and Jason Howells.

Man of the Match for Race was the returning Paul Hayward. The committee and coaching staff would like to praise both sides for their attitude and efforts for both games.
