Joe Calzaghe's fantastic performance has encouraged wannabe world boxing champions to go along to their local gym. Torfaen Warriors amateur boxing club, in Cwmbran, had ten new members when it opened its doors for the first time since theGwent boxer beat Jeff Lacy in Manchester on the weekend.
Simon Weaver, Torfaen Warriors head coach, said: "We had over 30 boys come along to training on Monday night. This included ten new members.
I was amazed and pleased to see them join our club. It happens every year during Wimbledon when the local tennis courts are packed out but this is the first time I've known it to happen with boxing. Joe is the name on everyone's lips.. What he did onthe weekendhas captured the imagination of the country. It can only have a positive effect on young people who want to follow in his footsteps.
"We keep youngsters off the street and give them something worthwhile to do in the evening. Amateur boxing takes commitment, fitness and a huge amount of discipline. Our club trains boxers of all ages. It's a skilful sport which require the utmost dedication."
Torfaen Warriors train in St Gabriel's Church Hall, St Dials Road, Old Cwmbran, on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 6.30- 8.30pm.
