MEMBERS of Pontypool Community Council have met with Torfaen MP, Paul Murphy, and Lynne Neagle AM to discuss their on-going concerns with car parking facilities in the town.
The councillors have been calling for a central car park to be provided in Pontypool for some time and these calls have been stepped up since Tesco introduced a two-hour parking limit.
Cllr Mike Jeremiah said the meeting was held to discuss the town's regeneration issues.
He said: "The problem we have with the Tesco car park having a two hour limit is there is not the time for people to walk into the town centre to shop. "Torfaen Council say we have got plenty of parking in Pontypool, but they are counting Trosnant Road and the Leisure Centre car parks.
"No one is going to park over there, walk into town to do their shopping and carry all their bags back."
Cllr Jeremiah said the community council is seeking to have a new car park built near the town centre to encourage shoppers to visit Pontypool.
"Ms Neagle is going to arrange a meeting with Andrew Davies, minister for economic development, to discuss the possibility of getting funding for a new town centre car park," he added.
