Winning streak grinds to halt with games' last kick

Abergavenny 18 Cwmbran 17

CWMBRAN came within seconds of their fourth straight win on Saturday, only to see Abergavenny's Carl Warlbyoff win the game with the last kick.

In-form Cwmbran have clawed themselves away from danger in Division Three East after successive wins over Senghenydd, Fairwater and Old Illtydians. And they looked on course for taking three points from the league leaders when a handling error let fly half Carl Moore run some 7-0 yard to score under the posts and give them a 17-15 lead. But a penalty call for hands in a ruck from the referee in the dying seconds allowed Walbyoff the chance to restore Aber's lead and ensure a return to winning ways.

Earlier, tries from Cwmbran winger Ben Salisbury and lock Jamie Williams had cancelled out Geraint Pritchard's opener for Abergavenny, who also had a brace from Gareth Hughes-Jones.

The hosts' coach, Gary Lawrence, later said he felt his side had been lucky at the end, but had also deserved the win for their more dominant display.
