Melanie enjoys a taxing career

TAX was definitely not taxing for one young Pontypool professional who rose through the ranks to go from receptionist to tax compliance manager.

Melanie Jamison, 23, a former Croesyceiliog High School pupil first applied for a job at the Newport accountancy firm Parker & Co, in 2001.

There was no opportunity then to start as an accountant, so Ms Jamison enrolled on a course designed to give her the edge.

Having heard that another person had obtained a position there through Newport-based training provider, T2 Skills, she enrolled on a similar course as a means to getting a foot in the door.

Gary Parker, of Parker & Co Accountants, said: "It can be hard for young people to get a job without much experience, but if people have talent, and the drive to make something of it, we're keen to give them a chance to develop."

Ms Jamison's determination and resourcefulness impressed the company's Gary Parker, and after being taken on as a receptionist Melanie quickly progressed and undertook accounts training, focussing on tax, and is now tax compliance manager.

Ms Jamison said: "I'm enjoying my career at Parker & Co Accountants, and I really appreciate the chances I've been given and have enjoyed the freedom to explore other areas in which the business operates."
