Learn all about our heritage

ORGANISATIONS involved in industrial heritage can learn from the experts who helped Blaenavon achieve its World Heritage Status in a free two-day event. Speakers from Sweden, Germany and across UK will be travelling to the town to take part in the programme on March 30 and 31.

The exercise has been designed to enable organisations to share their knowledge with each other and hear from different experts about the preservation and use of industrial heritage. They will also discuss how people can make the most of the history in their communities.

Councillor Neil Lewis, executive member for regeneration, said: "Blaenavon is a great example of what can be achieved though the promotion of industrial heritage. Torfaen Council led the way in getting World Heritage Status for Blaenavon and we want to share our knowledge.

"This event will show others how they can benefit from making the most of their history."

Each day of the event will consist of two workshop sessions, with an hour's presentation and debate and discussion opportunities. The workshops are free and open to all organisations with an active interest in industrial heritage.

The event is being funded through the Interreg IIIB - 'REVIT' project.

Other activities during the two days include a site visit to the former St Peter's School where a Heritage Centre is being built, a tour around Big Pit, an exhibition from key organisations, a 17th century banquet dinner and a themed photographic competition - to be judged by workshop participants.
