Blues hammer Panteg with second-half push

Blaenavon Blues 3 Panteg 1

PANTEG AFC travelled to Blaenavon on Saturday with hopes of causing an upset in the local derby, having held the Blues to a 1-1 draw at home recently.

But the return Gwent County Division One clash went to form, with Blaenavon Blues emerging 3-1 winners.

The game was even for much of the first half, but Blues finally broke the deadlock after 40 minutes. After the break, the home side then extended their lead with two goals in quick succession midway through the second period but Paul Morgan pulled one back for Panteg to ignite hopes of a comeback.

3-1 down with time ticking away, Luke Whittam then had a glorious chance to pull the score to 3-2 - but failed to take it. A goal would have set up a tense finale but instead Blues held on to keep on Mardy's toes at the top.

Blaenavon were certainly the better side and there were few complaints from the Panteg boys.

- Panteg AFC next host Albion Rovers, kick off on Saturday is 3pm at home. The second string, meanwhile, face Goytre in the cup quarter-final.
