Revamped look for kids' play area

THE CHILDREN'S play area in Pontypool Park is undergoing a £20,000 face-lift - and the council is to pick up the bill.

Pontypool Park manager Alex Andrews announced work has begun to upgrade the play area to provide new equipment for energetic youngsters. The improvements are expected to be completed by Easter and will see the balancing rugby balls, lock gates, stepping stones and old rugby swings replaced with new equipment specifically designed for children aged eight to 12 years.

Ms Andrew's explained the apparatus comes from a Danish Company called Kompan, a world-leading manufacturer of play ground equipment. She said: "The new equipment is different, innovative and considered to be challenging for users. It is also amongst the first to be installed in Wales."

Comprising a 'skyline' tower with various climbing, sliding and sitting activities along with a new type of roundabout, individual twirling poles and new swings, the council hopes apparatus will prove popular with young people.

The play surface will also be updated with recycled wood chip in bright colours as part of the council's commitment to use sustainable sources. Cllr John Cunningham, executive member for operational services, has welcomed the improvements.

He said: "The play area was recognised as being one of the best when it was first installed, but play equipment has evolved over the years."

To allow the work to be carried out the play area in the park will be closed and it is anticipated that it will be re-opened at Easter.
