PARTICIPANTS in Torfaen Council's 'Try Childcare' scheme have met Assembly Minister Jane Davidson, to celebrate the end of the successful pilot initiative.
The minister for education and lifelong learning attended an evening at Greenmeadow Golf Club, Cwmbran, to meet people who have been involved in, and those who benefited from, the project, which was designed to provide childcare for single parents who wished to return to work.
Torfaen was the only authority in Wales to take part in the pilot with funding from the government.
'Try Childcare' sought to provide childcare throughout the borough where there were the highest numbers of parents ready to return to work, but found the lack of childcare facilities a barrier, while working with lone parents helping them prepare for their to return to work.
Parent childcare advisors have worked closely with staff from Job Centre Plus, Torfaen Children's Information Service and other agencies increasing awareness of the pilot and engaging with parents.
A wide range of events have were held visiting parent and toddler groups, playgroups and Sure Start venues to support parents who are ready for work to achieve their goals.
Cllr John Turner, executive member for children and young people, said: "This project has provided real help for lone parents in Torfaen with a significant number returning to work. Support has been given to existing childcare providers to expand their provision and there have also been a number of new business start-ups.
"Part of Torfaen's community focused schools agenda is increased childcare provision and so far 17 schools have additional childcare on site and a further 17 have linked provision."
Cllr Turner added that nearly 500 additional childcare places have been created as a result of the pilot in 25 new settings.
