Saturday morning's sunshine gave hope for a full programme of matches going ahead, but heavy rain throughout the whole of area put paid to that and only six matches survived the weather.
Current Division One leaders Tranch Utd made a last minute grab of the ball to score a goal through Andrew Hayes with the last kick of the game to draw 3-3 away to Llanarth. The sides were level at half time. Llanarth's goals came from an unstoppable shot from Colin Morgan and a David Teague header. The Tranch first half goals came from Kevin Jones and Andrew Hayes. In the second half David Teague headed another goal for Llanarth who went 3-2 up. Then came prolific goal scorer Andrew Hayes' second goal of the match just before the referee blew for time. A bit of hard work on the Mardy pitch on Saturday morning helped to keep the match with Pontypool Town on, and the reward was three points to Mardy with a 4-1 win. Goal scorers for Mardy were Roddy Webb, Michael Sage and Jayde Kelly (2). The goal scorer for Pontypool Town was Matthew O'Neil. MOM Mardy: Kevin Melville. MOM Pontypool Town: Stuart Price.
Current Division Two leaders Prescoed lost their local derby match with Usk Town B 4-2. Goal scorer for Prescoed was Matthew Hook (2). Usk Town B's goals came from Lee Watkins, Ian Burton and Steve Wade plus an own goal by David Cook. Prescoed keeps the top position, four points ahead of second placed Pandy, but Pandy has a game in hand over Prescoed. MOM Prescoed: Jay Roberts. MOM Usk Town B: Lee Watkins. Pontypool Town B and Fairfield Utd drew 3-3. Goal scorers for Pontypool B were Scott Taylor, Philip Poulton and Nathan Jeremiah. Crickhowell won 6-3 away over Mardy B at Bailey Park. Goal scorers for Crickhowell were Craig Bennett (2), Chris Eacott, Luke Williams, Matthew Grove and Simon Wall. Goal scorers for Mardy B were Chris Carter, Gareth Staphill and Daniel Gailis. Crickhowell with three games to play are unlikely to finish higher than third position.
Sebastopol beat visitors Clydach Wasps B 2-1, but it was Clydach Wasps B that led Sebastopol at half time with a goal from Philip Odowa. Alex Hughes scored early in the second half to put Sebastopol level at 1-1. The ever-reliable Chris Phelps headed the Sebastopol winner in the 60th minute to give Sebastopol maximum points. In the Division Two match of the day fourth placed PILCS were at home to second placed Pandy. There were doubts on the PILCS pitch at the start of the match due to the afternoons heavy rain. Pandy went into a 2-0 lead through Jason Hughes and had a third goal disallowed, but the pitch seriously deteriorated and the match was abandoned after 20 minutes.
Pandy thought they were well on the way to taking maximum points with the early two goal lead.
Congratulations go to Mardy FC who won their Gwent County FA John Payne Barber Amateur Cup semi-final, beating Liswerry 2-1 on Saturday at Undy FC. Mardy were 1-0 down at half time to a Liswerry first half penalty. In the last 15 minutes Mardy scored twice to win 2-1, Liswerry lost their cool during this same period and had two players sent off and four players cautioned.
Mardy will play Abertillery Bluebirds in the final at Abergavenny Thursdays' Pen-y-Pound Stadium on Saturday, May 6 (kick off 2.30pm).
Last Saturday the Bluebirds beat Llanhilleth 1-0 in their semi-final, after extra time.
