Resurface campaign succeeds

VISITORS to the Brecon and Monmouthshire Canal can now enjoy a smoother journey thanks to the Griffithstown and Sebastopol Community Project.

After four years of seeking support and funding to improve the canal towpath for users, the group has finally realised their dream and work on resurfacing a two-mile stretch of the towpath has been completed.

Derek Selby, chairman of the Griffithstown and Sebastopol Community Project: "The canal path was full of pot-holes and had no disabled access.

"People with disabilities and parents with pushchairs had to overcome these obstacles when they used it.

"The path has now been completely tarmacked from Solomon's Bridge, in Sebastopol, to the Canal Basin, in Pontymoile.'

As well as improving access for the 5,000 people who regularly use the route, it is hoped guided walks will be organised to promote the area. Mr Selby said project members were delighted with the scheme.
