Cwmbran's triumphant homecoming display

CWMBRAN, fresh from their successful tour of Ireland, returned to club rugby at the weekend with an emphatic win over Risca.

The home side, playing at the Kings Head ground fore the last time this season, showed their intent right from the kick off and were soon rewarded with Joe Pengelli scoring, the try converted by Jake Hayward.

Cwmbran ploughed up the middle with force then spreading the ball wide created space and overlaps at will.

After excellent handling pacey winger Gareth Cripps bagged the next two tries followed by scrum half Ross Paul and captain Rhys Cantelo for a 31-0 half time lead.

Risca rallied after the break despite playing up the slope and looked a different team playing some good rugby with strong runs from their pack earning a well deserved unconverted try.

But Cwmbran's defence held firm thereafter while Ryan Bates, Mitch Waters added tries at the other end before Cripps completed his hat-trick. Cwmbran's disappointing season comes to a close this week, hoping to end on a high.

They are a talented side perhaps lacking self-belief but the development of individuals has been very pleasing for the coaching staff - who are already planning for next season.
