Blues' run of wins stopped

BLAENAVON Blues Girls' hectic end of season schedule was perhaps to blame for a 5-2 defeat at Ferndale on Sunday, after two midweek wins over Margam and Porthcawl.

Ferndale were in fine form for the quarter final cup game, not allowing the visitors any time or possession of the ball and cruising to a 4-0 half time lead. Blues pulled a goal back through striker Lyndsey Davies in the second half but the home side scored again minutes later and were back in control of the game before midfielder Dionne Thomas' late consolation.

The result was in stark contrast to the 3-2 win last Thursday, after a 110 mile round trip to Porthcawl with only 10 players. Thomas put Blues ahead after a minute, then Davies made it 2-0 before the break. Evidently sitting on their lead, Blaenavon then allowed Porthcawl a goal but Emily Reed, pushed up to midfield, restored the two-goal lead.

A second for Porthcawl with seven minutes remaining set up a nervous finish but Blues held on for a deserved victory.

At home to league leaders Margam on Tuesday April 25, Blues' goal machine Davies again found the net, only for the visitors to equalise ten minutes later. Sian Pritchard provided the assist when Davies lobbed the keeper or 2-1.

But the game was abandoned early because of an injury to the visitors' captain, later confirmed to be a badly sprained ankle. All at Blaenavon Blues would like to wish her a speedy recovery.
