MORE motorists are doing their own car servicing but most are not sure they can make a good job of it, new research has showed.

As many as 35% of car owners now carry out their own servicing, the poll by automotive parts company Kwik-Fit found. But 69% said they were not confident of servicing their own vehicle, while there has been a rise in the number of cars going completely unserviced.

The poll of 2,000 UK adults revealed that people were more confident of their servicing ability if they had an older car.

As many as 37% of those with cars from 1999 or earlier felt their vehicle was simple enough to self-service. Only 6% of those with cars from 2007 to 2010 expressed the same confidence.

Commenting on the findings, Kwik-Fit customer services director David White said: "Modern cars are increasingly reliant on computer technology so there are fewer tasks under the bonnet suitable for an amateur enthusiast as they won't have the necessary equipment.

"Car owners shouldn't rely on the MoT to pick up faults as this mainly focuses on safety factors. A proper service will highlight issues which could cause a future breakdown and also cover areas too complicated for most DIY mechanics."
