Torfaen youngsters in crime crackdown challenge
YOUNGSTERS from across Torfaen tackled issues of crime and anti-social behaviour as part of a unique business challenge.
Groups from five comprehensive schools formed companies and came up with ideas to deal with anti-social behaviour and promote young people in a positive light.
Each team had to submit a written report of their idea, complete with evidence of their research, and a ten minute presentation, each helped by mentors from the business world.
This week they presented their ideas to a panel of judges in Cwmbran's Congress Theatre, which consisted of Torfaen council chief executive Alison Ward, Cwmbran Shopping manager Gerry Hutchings, Abersychan councillor Gwyneira Clark, Gwent Police superintendent Peter Keen, and Ar gus Valleys edition manager Darren Evans.
The overall winning group was Youth Solutions, from Fairwater Comprehensive, who produced an educational film about the dangers of under-age drinking for primary pupils.
The group won £500, and an extra £100 for the best presentation.
Torfaen Against Crime (TorAC) from West Monmouth comprehensive, who came up with a video help point for telephone boxes, won £100 for best written report.
Premier Reps from St Alban's, whose idea was a graffiti wall at the Cwmbran Centre for Young People, won the £100 prize for achieving milestones set down for them.
The £100 teamwork award went to Gang Raid 8 (GR8), from Llantarnam comprehensive, whose idea was a help point to report anti-social behaviour.
Crime Crushers, from Abersychan comprehensive, whose idea was a video about the implications of shoplifting, won £50 for having the best showcase display.
Norman Lloyd, strategic lead for the project, said the groups had originally been "apprehensive" about the challenge, but their journey and development had been "amazing."
"They have been terrific and shown imaginative ideas," he added.
The !Say Yes! Challenge was developed by Beverley Clark of Aim2, with backing from Prudential, investment group PRUPIM, and charity Crime Concern.
