Squirrels – cute bushy tailed animals spotted scampering up trees….or the making of a lovely meal for all the family?

Budgens in London has recently stocked its shelves with squirrel meat putting the furry critters back on the British menu!

But how popular is this new ‘meat’. Currently only stocked in one London branch the manager of the store said that it had attracted huge interest but many customers were looking and not buying.

Other local butchers shops have had more success though. One butcher form Somerset sells ten squirrels a week at less than £3 each and said: 'To start with, customers try it through novelty, but they come back and buy more of them.

'Squirrel tastes similar to a rabbit. Some people say they taste a bit nutty but I don't know if it's in the mind.'

Critics have spoken out about this latest addition to the shelves. Zoologist Juliet Gellatley said: ‘'If this store is attempting to stand out from the crowd by selling squirrel, the only message they are giving out is that they are happy to have the blood of a beautiful wild animal on their hands for the sake of a few quid.'
