From Rags to Gags - The Memoirs of A Comedy Writer, by Vince Powell (Apex Publishing, £12.99).

VINCE Powell along with Harry Driver was responsible for many classic television moments in the 1960s. As well as writing for Harry Worth's comedy series on the BBC their writing talents were also snapped up by 'the other side' ITV as regular scriptwriters for Coronation Street.

Of course, Powell and Driver's talents also lay in comedy writing. Many scripts sprung from their typewriters including Nearest and Dearest, George and The Dragon, Bless This House and the controversial Love Thy Neighbour, making them formidable writing opponents for the likes of Galton and Simpson and Perry and Croft.

From Rags to Gags contains Vince's reminiscences of over fifty years in showbusiness from starting out as a struggling comic to his successful collaboration with Harry Driver. There are many anecdotes about people he has worked with from Arthur Lowe and Jimmy Jewel to Sid James and Cilla Black. Like his finest comedy half-hours, Vince's story raises many smiles and recalls some of the greater moments from the golden age of television comedy.
