Balletcymru’s performance of Beauty and Beast at the Riverfront Newport was possibly one of the most beautifully simplistic ballets I’ve seen; it was enchanting and mesmerising yet technically astounding.

Balletcymru brings classical ballet to life with a twist of innovative storytelling. You are taken on a journey of emotion and left feeling part of the story, based on the film by Jean Cocteau. The breath taking and poignant choreography (Darius James & Amy Doughty) is emphasised by whimsical set and costume designs (Steve Denton) who deserves praise for his Beast costume.

When Beauty (Lydia Arnoux) first meets the Beast (Mandev Sokhi) the chemistry just works and is truly magical. Throughout the whole show Beauty’s delicate performance and Beast’s jittering awkwardness just captivates the audience as you watch their romance blossom.

There are some incredible moments throughout the whole show. Scenes in the forest where the dancers transform into part of the scenery and use candles to guide Beauty and the final dance routine touch my soul.

Tickets are still available for performances across the UK including Wales Millennium Centre and Sadler Wells in London and I encourage you to experience the delights Balletcymru can offer.
