Billed as 'the classic story on stage', Dirty Dancing does what it says on the tin.

The show is very much a step by step recreation of the film, with some added songs and scenes, and while it doesn't quite meet the bar set by Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey, it still provides a fun-packed night out.

Set in the summer of 1963, the musical, more of a play with dancing and a soundtrack, follows the love story between Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman and Johnny Castle at the cheesy summer camp Kellermans.

The choreography is impressive, particularly the first time Baby visits the staff quarters and sees Johnny dancing with the very leggy Penny.

There were whoops and cheers as the most famous lines (‘I carried a watermelon’ and ‘no-one puts Baby in a corner’) were delivered showing that many audience members are enthusiastic fans of the film.

The set cleverly allowed for quick scene changes using projections to show a raunchy dance party or scenic woodlands. The scene where Baby practices ‘that lift’ was particularly impressive making it appear she and Jonny were in the water.

Roseanna Frascona, who played Baby, bore a striking resemblance to Jennifer Grey and played the nervous, naive part well with a highlight being her week of dance lessons on a revolving set.

The whole show was gearing up to the final scene where Johnny comes back for Baby. The audience were ready for it, especially due to the slower second half, and clapped with glee when Johnny dragged Baby onto the stage ready for the iconic lift.

At the Wales Millennium Centre until March 28.
