This show is billed as 'a riot of all singing and all dancing nonsense' - and as 'an evening of exquisite silliness'!
And if that was what the audience came expecting, then they certainly weren't disappointed.
The Mikado, probably the best-loved of Gilbert and Sullivan's operettas, is brought to the Welsh capital this week by The National Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company and the National Festival Orchestra.
Set in the Japanese town of Titipu, it tells the complicated love story of Yum Yum (Claire Lees) and her suitor Nanki-Poo (a 'wandering minstrel' in disguise, who is actually the son of the Mikado himself)!
The star of the show though is definitely Richard Gauntlett as Ko-Ko, the Lord High Executioner who has never actually beheaded anyone.
He is especially hilarious in his well-known songs 'little list' and 'tit willow', and the song and dance Here's a How-de-do with Yum Yum and Nanki-Poo, which is repeated faster and faster until both he and the audience are in stitches!
But this show is at its resounding best when the entire cast are on stage, fantastically costumed in black and white with splashes of red and purple.
The dances are perfectly choreographed, the orchestra under the musical directorship of James Hendry were superb - and it was just a shame that the theatre was only half full for this first night and that there were empty seats when there was such a stunning show on stage.
Hopefully the weekend will prove more popular as this company continue its short run - the show is on until Saturday.
