As Doctor Who approaches its 50th anniversary on television, comedian Toby Hadoke brings the sequel to his nostalgic Doctor Who stand up comedy Moths Ate My Doctor Who Scarf to Newport Riverfront next week.

Entitled My Stepson Stole My sonic Screwdriver Chortle Award nominee Toby’s sequel to his first show has been described as compelling, incisive and universal in appeal and you don’t have to be a Doctor Who fan to enjoy it!

“This one less nostalgic and a bit more bittersweet,” Toby tells me, “the worry was with the first one going so well this would be a carbon copy and not as good. The first one took me 33 years to write, this one I had a year.”

“It’s very autobiographical,” he continues, “I think all good comedy is based on truth. When I wrote the first one it was so overlong all the bits that I cut out were the jokes about Doctor Who and became the story of me growing up without a dad and Doctor Who been on telly and then been taken away. Then I was a dad and then Doctor Who came back and I sort of bonded with my kids over that. I wanted to do a show that was funny whether you’d seen Doctor Who or not.

Since the last show my relationship had changed. I met my stepson, who was deaf and had never seen Doctor Who. We can’t talk the traditional way but through Doctor Who he and I have a special relationship. Its all peppered with jokes which make it sound very earnest, my mind is not abstract enough to craft jokes from scratch they have to come out of some situation that’s reality.”

Toby’s affection for the sci-fi series has seen him talk about it on various platforms. He is currently undertaking a series of charity podcasts in which he interviews somebody involved with every single story ever made for the show. He will also be participating at an official Doctor Who 50th anniversary event next month.

“The audience know it’s not someone jumping on the bandwagon,” he says of his comedy show, “there’s something quite funny about a grown man eulogising about green monsters from his childhood and getting cross when his DVDs aren’t in chronological order.”
