DESPITE the weather affecting crops this year, half a ton of apples were sold in Chepstow on Sunday.
More than 1,000 people attended the town’s annual Apple Day, which celebrated the much-loved fruit.
Town councillor and one of the organisers, Ned Hayward, said many events of the same kind were cancelled throughout the UK because frosts in spring killed the apple blossom.
The event, at the Drill Hall, had 54 different varieties of apples on display, a performance from The Widders dance group, and a cookery competition judged by chef Jim Hamilton.
Cllr Hayward won an apple peeling competition with a peel length of more than three metres, while experts helped people identify apple varieties they brought.
The town’s Apple Day was created by the town council and Transition Chepstow.
