THE Tesco store in Spytty Retail Park, Newport had to be evacuated on Saturday evening after police and fire crews were called to reports of a blaze.
Crews from South Wales Fire and Rescue and Gwent Police attended the site to tackle the blaze after receiving calls at 6.20pm.
The fire service said the fire could be traced to an underground bins storage area measuring 10m by 10m.
They said smoke alarms went off in the store as smoke had reached inside but the actual store was undamaged.
The fire is believed to have been started deliberately but the fire service said they are not investigating any further.
Despite plumes of thick smoke the fire was quickly extinguished.
